June 2008

My name is Gerard McKevitt and I am to begin as the new headteacher at St
Bernadette’s
Catholic
Primary School
after half term.
I am a Prestonian (don’t hold that against me!) born and bred in Deepdale next to the football ground. I am the eldest of three brothers and attended St
Gregory’s
Catholic
Primary
School
in
Preston
, Junior Seminary at St Michael’s Kirkby
Lonsdale and
St Joseph
’s Upholland. I have taught
in four Catholic primary schools over twenty four years and I have been the headteacher at St Bernard’s
Catholic
Primary School
for nine years.
I am the proud father of James (14 years
old) and Erin (11 years old) who both attend Our Lady’s
Catholic
High School
in
Preston
. We love going on holiday with my brother’s family
and friends to France and visiting family in
Ireland
.
My hobbies include playing football (always
badly) and my heroes include Jimmy Johnston (Celtic) and George Best. I also
love listening to music but I am told that I am stuck in the 70’s.
I consider it a privilege to be given this
opportunity and I am extremely grateful to Mrs Halsall and the staff for making me feel so welcome. I hope that I can continue to
develop the wonderful work that goes on at St Bernadette's and I look forward
to serving you as the new headteacher. Thank you.

become actively involved in the Church and the world. The workshop is open to

people. To ensure a place, and for more details, contact

What is the YCW?
The Young Christian Workers (YCW) is an organisation for
young people, which is ran by young people. The YCW calls young people
together, out of their isolation, into groups so that they can come to know
their true worth and dignity.
The YCW recognises that young people are the experts of their own
reality and are often the best placed people to be the means of transformation
in their own lives.
Through a process of enquiry, reflection and action (See, Judge,
Act) they grow as leaders, serving, educating and representing other young
people.
The mission of the YCW is lived out amongst young workers in the
working world and those seeking work or studying. The YCW offers young adults
(16-30) an organisation ideal for a parish, with the opportunity to link life
and faith through reflection in small groups and lived Christian action.
The
Mission
on the YCW
The YCW serves, educates & represents
YCW is an organisation which links groups of young people/young adults together
through friendship, formation and action. It serves to educate and represent
young people. It organises special gatherings and campaigns so that young
people can come together, share experiences and have a positive effect through
action in their neighbourhoods, places of work and/or families:
Serves: YCW serves young people by responding to their needs. By taking
action young people in the movement serve others in the local community and
abroad.
Educates: YCW educates
through its method. It is a school for leaders
in life. Young people learn by doing and by getting involved.
Represents: YCW represents
young people at local regional and national level. Through it’s meetings, enquiries, campaigns and surveys. It
educates young people by enabling them to participate in action and to learn by
doing.

Comment by Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor on the result of the HFE vote on abortion (20 May) 21st May 2008
“Many people of all faiths and none will
have been very disappointed by the result of last night’s votes on the abortion
time limit. But this issue will not go away. Whilst the law affects attitudes,
it does not in itself compel anyone to have an abortion. Even without a change
in the law there is much we can all do to change the situation. There are many
people on all sides of this debate who agree that 200,000 abortions a year is
far too many, and abortion on this scale can only be a source of profound
sadness and distress to us all. Abortion is not only a personal choice. It is
also about the choices our society makes to support women, their partners and
families who face difficult decisions. For the sake of our common humanity, and
the lives at stake, we must work to foster a new understanding and approach to
relationships, responsibility and mutual support. Even without a change in the
law we can and should work together at least to make abortion much rarer.
